World War One day was commemorated across school today.

The MFL department encouraged reflection among our students today as part of the school's World War One commemoration day.

First of all students wrote and discussed their first thoughts upon looking at some horrifying pictures of World War One. Here are a few of the pictures they discussed and some of their first reactions upon seeing the images.

The students discussed their feelings and thoughts about the suffering and deaths of millions of soldiers, among them Germans, British, French and other nationalities. Whichever nationality soldiers were, their suffering, pain and sorrow was immeasurable.

On a more uplifting note students then watched a short film clip about the Christmas truce of 1914 and imagined what it would be like to make friends with soldiers who had previously been seen as the enemy. Many students were heard to say: "they were just like us".

Many thanks to all the students who took part in the discussions in such a mature and reflective manner today and were willing to consider World War One from another perspective.
