BBC Wales reports on the need for language learning in Wales

According to a report by BBC Wales last week young people in Wales risk being isolated on the fringes of the global jobs market if they are lacking in the communication skills most highly valued by employers.

Whilst numbers opting for GCSE languages have fallen considerably since 2005, the BBC was keen to point out the significant concerns for Wales with students not choosing languages.

Our economy is more dependent than ever on international links and the decline in language learning is described as disturbing. In other parts of the UK the numbers of students choosing languages at GCSE and A-level is starting to rise again due to the introduction of the E-BACC qualification; in the E-BACC qualification a language GCSE is recognised as an essential skill.

As students in Cowbridge Comprehensive you should recognise the need for your language skills. Don't get left behind on the world stage! Maximise your chances of getting a good job!

Languages are in vogue in the fashion industry.

Foreign language skills are becoming increasingly important for those aiming for the top of this highly globalised trade.

In an article in the guardian on Friday 17th January a number of important points were highlighted about the power of languages if you are considering working in the fashion industry.

International brands look for language skills when recruiting. Total fluency is not always necessary.

Language study may not be à la mode at the moment in Britain, yet the British Fashion Council has highlighted the power of languages to extend the worldwide reach of UK-based designers and brands. In its latest report, they want to improve the British fashion industry's world standing by focusing more on languages.

Foreign travel is one aspect that makes the fashion industry appear glamorous to outsiders. However, you won't get as far speaking only English on these trips, says Patrick Clark, another languages graduate and online editor for glossy magazine Schön! When we speak he is about to leave for Milan to report on Fashion Week, where networking outside shows is a vital part of the job.

More than half of all UK trade abroad is with our near neighbours.

In December it was reported that the UK may be falling behind in business due to the lack of language skills among many British people.

The 'European Survey' on language competences has also affirmed that only nine per cent of English teenagers today can demonstrate credible foreign language skills.

If young people in the UK do not have the language skills required by businesses in an increasingly globalised world they will be putting themselves at a distinct disadvantage compared to many of their European counterparts as businesses continue to globalise. Businesses in the UK will simply employ people from other European countries instead of you.
