Year 9 STEM science and languages workshops take place this week

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week all of Year 9 have been taking part in Languages and Science workshops. The MFL department are proud that with the help of SEE-Science, we have been lucky enough to enjoy the expertise and insights of 4 different speakers who all use languages in their business and scientific careers and in Wales: David, a UK diplomat, Chris and Sarah from Tata Steel and Lars from Dow Corning.

Here are some of 9X enjoying working on a task looking at different international scientific companies.

Ben Jones presents his group's findings loudly and confidently.

Here they are concentrating intently on the task in hand.

Lars Luckoff presenting his final quiz with the class on Thursday. The prize for the team with the highest marks in the quiz was a pot of silicone. Lars works for Dow Corning.

One of the final thought provoking questions in Lars' quiz.

Lars and the students having fun at the end of the quiz.

The MFL department of Cowbridge Comprehensive would like to express their thanks, danke schön, merci to David, Lars, Sarah and Chris, who all gave up their valuable time to talk to Year 9 about how their use languages in their careers and how languages have helped their careers in business and science to progress.

We are sure that all of Year 9 have enjoyed the thought provoking process considering new careers options open to them in Science, Languages and other areas of course!

25 years ago today the Berlin Wall fell. Germany commemorates andcelebrates.

9th November 1989 after months of political pressure the Berlin Wall was forced down. Germany could begin to celebrate and hope for freedom for all its citizens.

BBC tells the history in 60 seconds
To celebrate 25 years since "der Mauerfall" Berlin created a "Lichtgrenze"- a light border along the route where the wall originally was.

Here are thousands of people celebrating and hoping for freedom 25 years ahold today.

This video also gives a very succinct and fascinating version of the events!

Be frugal with google (translate!)

Here are 3 very good reasons why your brain is cleverer than google translate!

What it should say: entrance only with a tour guide!
What it should say: bienvenue! De rien means "you're welcome" in French, after someone has said merci!
Whilst this is a beautiful translation fail, it's still a bit weird!

Welcome back to a new half term of fun and work in French and German.

Practice makes the master: In other words "practice makes perfect"
Stay calm and work hard

European Day of Languages celebrations - Food! Essen! A manger!

Friday 26th September was an exciting day for Cowbridge MFL students with lots of exciting events taking place all day!
During lunchtime students had the opportunity to taste délicieux food from European countries: pain au chocolat, brioche, chorizo, salami, stollen, fromage, pain, Haribo Bonbons, chocolat and much more.

The excitement at the food!
To be able to relish the tasty international food, there was only one deal; the students had to ask for the food in either cymraeg, français, deutsch, español or italiano! Some students chose to talk in another language to ask for the food too; in addition to the above languages we heard some Swedish, some Slovak and also Norwegian!
