Cowbridge MFL and Welsh Departments celebrate the European Day of Languages

Cowbridge staff and students have celebrated the European Day of languages today!
26th September is an annual Europe-wide day of celebration to promote language learning and the fun of languages! In Cowbridge students relished the opportunity to taste a variety of European food include German Schokolade, French brioche and pain au chocolat, Polish ham, Spanish chorizo, Greek feta cheese, Welsh cakes and Italian cake. The only requirement was that they had to ask for the food in either French, German, Welsh or Spanish!

Key Stage 3 students tasting some delicious European food
and trying out their language skills.

Helpful phrases!
In Welsh, French and German lessons students also took on the logo challenge! Students had to work out whether the logos were of Welsh, French, German or Swiss companies and also what their products or services were! We wanted to raise students' awareness of the huge possibilities for working in international companies where their language skills will be valued and rewarded!

Guess if these companies are Swiss, Welsh, French or German and what their business is!

Many thanks, Vielen Dank, Merci beaucoup, Diolch to all the MFL teachers and Year 12 and Year 13 students who helped make the lunchtime food tasting such a fun experience!

More European Day of Language stories will follow shortly including our "Show us your tongue" film, Year 7's Eurosong and Y12's visit to Llansannor primary school's language club!

German elections get underway - 22nd September 2013

The 2013 German elections have got underway today.
The current chancellor (the German equivalent of our prime minister) Angela Merkel is seeking to be elected for the third time as leader of Germany.
Even if Angela Merkel and her party, the CDU do win the largest number of seats in parliament, it is unlikely that the CDU will gain a majority of the votes so the CDU will probably have to build a coalition (share power) with other parties. Forming a coalition is however the norm in Germany.

What would it be like to learn English as a foreign language?!

If you think learning French or German is a challenge, so is English!
Imagine what foreigners have to think about when leaning English!
T.S.W., Hints on Pronunciation for Foreigners

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird,
And dead: it’s said like bed, not bead –
For goodness’ sake don’t call it “deed”!
Watch out for meat and great and threat
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.)
A moth is not a moth in mother
Nor both in bother, broth in brother,
And here is not a match for there
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear,
And then there’s dose and rose and lose –
Just look them up – and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward,
And font and front and word and sword,
And do and go and thwart and cart –
Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start!
A dreadful language? Man alive.
I’d mastered it when I was five!

Congratulations - Félicitations - Herzlichen Glückwunsch on excellent A-level and GCSE results in French and German!

Congratulations to all Cowbridge MFL students on another successful year! 92% of GCSE French students achieved an A*- C at GCSE and 45% of students achieved an A* or A! Bravo!
100% of GCSE German students achieved an A* - C and 32% achieved an A* or A!
At A-level in French and German students also achieved very well and met their target grades. A special mention should go to Katie Wynne who achieved A* in both French and German and will shortly be going on to study French and German at the University of Cambridge.
With languages at GCSE and A-level being very highly respected subjects by the top universities, there is no doubt that Cowbridge MFL students are putting themselves in an excellent position in the competitive university market place and in the global economy by studying such well regarded subjects.
